PROJECT NO: 3  OUTLINE THE MAIN MODES OF TRANSPORT IN THE DISTRICT/CITY YOU LIVE WHAT PROBLEMS DO YOU AND OTHER CITIZENS FACE PERTAINING TO THE AVAILABILITY OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT?  ANALYSE.

Introduction

                                                                                                          ( next page)

Infrastructure is  of great significance for an economy. The every working of an economy
is supported by these infrastructural facilities. The development and expansion of the infrastructure is a necessary condition for increasing agricultural and industrial production, but these sectors require certain facilities like transport and communications, banking, marketing, power etc. All these facilities and services taken together constitute the economic infrastructure of the economy. Economic infrastructure consists of those service facilities which affects the production and distribution system. The larger the infrastructural facilities, the bigger are the opportunities to produce more. Gunnar Myrdal in Asian Drama regards the existence of infrastructure as a necessary condition for development.

Presentation

                                                                                                          ( next page)

The main economic infrastructure of our economy is transport system. Transport Services are indispensable for the smooth functioning of the economy. These includes Rail and Road
transport. A good transport system helps to expand the market for goods. In India, Railways are the most important form of transport. The first railway line, 34 km long, was laid between Bombay and Thane in 1853. Indian Railways at present are the country's single largest undertaking. It is important to note that Indian Railways network is increasingly electrified to provide faster, safer and pollution free transport at lower cost. But the main problem in this transportation is that problem of overcrowding.
There has been less emphasis on construction of new lines. There is problem of renewal and up gradation of tracks and Indian Railways are far behind the international standards.

Road and road transport are another very important component of our transport system. It links remote areas. It is through road transport that raw materials reach the factories and their manufactures to the consumers spread all over the country. But the problems are inadequate paved roads. Standard paved roads constitute nearly 50 per cent of the total. Out of them only 20 per cent are in good condition. This has led to the problem of frequent damages and Premature Vehicle deterioration. Heavy pressure on national highways, inadequate rural roads, high burden of taxes are the major problems faced by road transport in India other problem of road transport are frequent road accidents and bad condition of roads.

Conclusion

                                                                                                        (next page )

A good transport system is the life line of an economy of a nature. Road transport is undertaken in India by state governments, private operators and cooperatives. In most of the states, the state governments have nationalised the bus transport system either completely or partially Indian Railways now-a-days are functioning as a commercial undertaking instead of merely a public utility service.
